Running cost is the biggest reason Sri Lankans switch to electric. Here is how to work out the numbers for yourself.
Electricity cost per charge
The iBIKE SLI 100 battery holds about 2.2 kWh. A full charge therefore uses roughly 2.2 units on your electricity bill. Multiply 2.2 by your CEB rate per unit to get your cost per charge, then divide by the distance you ride (up to 100 km).
Petrol cost per km
Divide the current petrol price per litre by your scooter’s real-world km per litre. A typical petrol scooter costs several times more per km than charging an electric bike.
Maintenance
Electric bikes have no engine oil, spark plugs, air filters or clutch. Routine maintenance is mainly brakes, tyres and a periodic check-up, so yearly servicing costs are lower.
Example: 40 km per day
| Electric (iBIKE SLI 100) | Petrol scooter | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy used | ≈0.9 units of electricity | ≈0.8–1 litre of petrol |
| Engine oil / filters | None | Regular |
| Battery warranty | 3 years | — |
Plug in today’s CEB rate and petrol price to see your monthly saving.
Bottom line
For daily commuting, an electric bike usually pays back part of its price through fuel and maintenance savings. See iBIKE price and leasing.
